Herman Miller is a canon of authentic mid century modern design – reproducing the greats: Charles and Ray Eames, George Nelson and Isamu Noguchi. The design house also commissions and manufactures contemporary designs from an array of talent including Yves Behar, the designer behind Herman Miller’s most recent office chair SAYL. They are also, of course, the name behind the infamous Aeron chair. They sign their name to the groundbreaking Embody chair and continue to push boundaries in the area of contemporary ergonomic office design each and every day.

FIX Healthcare Gets Their Design Fix

Saturday, August 13th, 2011

Fix Healthcare, located in the Atrium building at 805 Johnson St., Victoria BC, offers an impressive range of services and is also a feast for the eyes. Featuring the new SAYL Chair by Yves Behar for Herman Miller, Fix’s reception room is bright, modern, comfortable, and ergonomic to boot.

Other Gabriel Ross pieces in the space include an Alvar Aalto side table with black lacquer surfaces and Aalto’s signature bent wood frame. This is the perfect compliment to Fix’s wood striped accent wall and reception area.

George Nelson’s bench for Herman Miller with black legs and slotted wood top also makes an appearance, and of course, ties in perfectly.

SAYL, Herman Miller’s latest ergonomic office furniture marvel, is offered as a side chair (as shown above) and also an office/task chair. Read our previous blog  about SAYL and Yves Behar’s collaboration with Herman Miller, here. As a side chair, SAYL is unique and intriguing upon first glance, and an incredibly comfortable and supportive sitting experience.

This chair makes perfect sense when paired with a contemporary healthcare facility offering such a wide array of services and classes including acupuncture, chiropractic, physiotherapy, massage therapy, pilates and yoga.

Our thanks to Fix for supporting authentic design and providing such a valuable service to Victoria’s downtown core. We wish them the best of luck!

Chatty Cathy?

Thursday, June 23rd, 2011

Whether you are leaving a note for your roommate, displaying your neice’s kindergarten artwork or making a grocery list, this product does it all. “Chat-Board” is the newest line to Gabriel Ross and we are really excited to have it. Founded in 2003, Chat Boards are a modern Danish re-design of the traditional wipe board. Combining decoration and function, these magnetic glass panels also serve as a bulletin board. Chat Boards are made to suit corporate offices and private homes alike, boasting a wide variety of colours and sizes.

Chat-Board, Lavender - image source: chat-board.dk NOTE: Actual Marker and magnets differ from what's shown in this image.

We just installed three boards in our showroom in different sizes in red, white and rose. The chrome magnets are super strong and able to hold some serious note paper. Also, the markers wipe off easily with either the eraser brush or just a cloth rag. Because these boards are made of glass, you can clean them just as you would glass – with window cleaner. These certainly won’t stain and show ghost images of previous board meetings in a few months like the standard wipe board.

Eye Spy… Eames Sofa Compact

Monday, March 7th, 2011

Sofa Compact by Charles and Ray Eames for Herman Miller - photo: hermanmiller.com

Designed in1954, the Sofa Compact was an adaptation from a built in sofa that Charles and Ray Eames designed for their own home in the 1940′s. The freestanding version has been in production since 1954 without interruption. Although the original intent for this piece was probably to have it work for smaller constricted spaces, this sofa is beautiful in any modern interior with an aim for spaciousness and clean lines.

Herman Miller offers a large array of upholstery options for the Sofa Compact that vary from tight/smooth commercial weaves to lush felted wools such as Kvadrat’s Divina Melange. Depending on your fabric choice, this sofa works well in various spaces including commercial settings and office waiting rooms, to cozy apartment living rooms. Parking lots too …

Herman Miller Introduces: “SAYL” by Yves Behar

Thursday, October 21st, 2010

This month, Herman Miller launched its latest addition to an already monster collection of exceptional task chairs.  At a price point starting out well below the infamous Aeron and most recent Embody chairs, “SAYL”, by Yves Behar, is accessible to a wider consumer scope. True to Herman Miller’s reputation, top notch design and function did not suffer as a result of the attractive price tag.  This chair is lovely to look at: sculpturally impressive with a minimal approach and boasts the ergonomics that this design house is famous for.

SAYL by Yves Behar for Herman Miller

SAYL

Here’s Herman Miller’s product story on SAYL:

People at their best live unframed, going beyond expectations to surprise and delight us. With SAYL, we set out to design and build a chair family that gives form to that spirit. Inspired by the principles of suspension bridges, the frameless back of the SAYL work chair encourages a full range of movement while the suspension back material keeps you cool—all with an extremely small environmental impact. It is everything a Herman Miller chair should be. At a very attainable price.

Meet the Generation Chair by Knoll

Wednesday, February 24th, 2010

Does the world need another chair? Certainly that’s a reasonable question to ask when the planet is already populated by hundreds, if not thousands, of different chairs—chairs for working, dining, relaxing, playing, napping, waiting, or, even, admiring—some are a wonder to behold but awkward to sit in and some are so comfortable that one is reluctant to get up again.

Knoll Generations Work Chair

That legacy continues today, as seen in this latest release by Knoll™, and their collaboration with Formway Design, the Wellington, New Zealand-based collaborative. It’s not a chair. It’s a movement. Introducing Generation by Knoll™. The first chair that lets you sit how you want. The Generation chair offers a new standard of comfort and unrestrained movement, supporting the range of postures and work styles typical of today’s workplace. Discover how Generation’s flexing and supportive features enable individual expression, and explore how this revolutionary work chair reflects our commitment to environmental sustainability.

It’s worth noting that the concept of seating that moves as you move was not entirely new. In fact, one could argue that the bean bag chair of the 1960s, which quickly became a ubiquitous symbol of hippie informality, could be considered a forerunner of Generation by Knoll: each time the user shifts position on the bean bag chair, the “beans” (actually polystyrene beads) rearrange themselves to support you—comfort is entirely a result of automatic responsiveness. For Knoll, it was time to take this idea of elastic design—where the product rearranges itself in response to its user—to a new level.
