Today is installation day for The Gallery of Greater Victoria’s “Art In Bloom – Celebrating the art of gardening”. One part of this dynamic community event is the “floral interpretations” where artists, designers, and florists create botanical interpretations of various works in the gallery’s diverse art collection.
Detail of our Floral Interpretation
Check out our floral interpretation in the mansion section of the gallery March 28th – April 2nd. We were given Canadian artist, Sophie Pemberton’s “Spring” of 1902 to interpret – a very large traditional landscape portrait. We decided to honour this beautiful piece by creating a traditional loose arrangement in a golden urn to emulate to the gold frame around the painting. Curly willow branches reference the trees in the landscape and a collection of blue, pink and yellow flowers including dancing lady orchids pay tribute to the florals depicted.

There are many other great things going on during this event including a lecture series, workshops, silent auction, a red carpet gala and much more. With proceeds going towards exhibitions and programming at the gallery, this is a great opportunity support your local art community while celebrating the welcomed arrival of spring! Converse and Marimekko have teamed up to produce a product of my own personal obession: super cute sneakers! My head exploded when I realized that the classic cool Chuck Taylors would now be sporting the iconic graphic textile designs of Marimekko. What a perfect collaboration.

The vases are documentation of the designer’s experiment in colour and glaze application. She used industrial paint in standard colours for the first 82 vases and then collaborated with the experts at royal tichelaar makkum to combine historical mineral recipies with contemporary formulas in a layering effect that resulted in new, unique and dynamic colours and patinas.

Modernica decides to reissue Criss Cross Bubble Lamp in Cigar, Ball and Pear shapes. The Criss Cross was the last of George Nelson Bubble Lamps that Modernica reintroduced.
Criss Cross Pear Bubble Lamp
Modernica recently blogged “Criss Cross Revived!”, comparing “Kris Kross” the 90′s hip hop group, with the latest reissued Criss Cross Bubble Lamps.
Both are iconic and unique. Those kids were electric and their hit was one of catchiest songs at dance clubs at that time. They also created a crazy fashion trend. Kids wore their jeans backwards and were jumping to the song. Maybe the two Chris’ or ” mack daddies” of Kris Kross will make their own comeback someday soon and we’ll see kids wearing their jeans backwards and bringing jiggedy back.
