Eye Spy… Ovale Collection by Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec for Alessi

Tuesday, July 12th, 2011

It seems the hard edged square dinner plate and ultra asymmetrical bowl phenomenon has mellowed out a little, and sweet simplicity in dinnerware has reigned supreme. Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec’s “Ovale” collection embodies clean lines, beautiful and elegant shapes, and unbeatable functionality in a variety of sizes and multitude of accent pieces.

Ovale does not deliver a single serving impression. These pieces require a second glance, some figuring out – a platter of intrigue for the curious and discerning eye. They aren’t actually oval shaped, but almost. And that missing fraction is delightfully captivating. Carefully considered details… that’s where awesomeness lives.

Beyond the standard dinnerware – plates, side plates, bowls, cups, etc., Ovale has a wonderful selection of additional pieces including covered stoneware, serving dishes and trays, an ice bucket, and a little sauce plate (shown above).

The “Ovale” collection strives to be original, but it also wants to be rustic and traditional. We set out in pursuit of delicate expression. This composition speaks about every day life, about breakfast, lunch, about everyone getting together for dinner. There is a desire for simplicity.

Victoria’s Wannawafel on Dragons’ Den

Thursday, October 14th, 2010

If you have walked past market square in the last few months, you have probably experienced the incredibly delicious scent of Wannawafel at 560 Johnson Street.

Wannawafel Market Square location

This Belgian waffle restaurant is locally owned and recently made an exciting appearance on Canada’s entrepreneureal dream maker/masher television show “Dragons’ Den”.

Wannawafel on Dragons' Den

Wannawafel owners towed their custom designed street vending cart across Canada as part of their presentation, which was definitely a contributing factor to their success on the show.  I expect we will see these carts popping up across the country, now that the business is offering franchises in partnership with Dragon, Jim Treliving.

At Wannawafel’s brick and mortar store in Victoria, you can try one of their delicious waffles while sitting cozy on Gabriel Ross’ own “1951″ bar stools by Emeco.

Emeco 1951 Barstool

We wish Renaat and his family all the best with their growing business.  I can barely wait for my next Sunday morning waffle…

Kitty Cat Mat

Tuesday, January 26th, 2010

I think everybody and their dog should have a downtown Kitty cat mat for their furry feline friend.

Place it under the food dish to catch all the bits and give your kitty something to look at while they lap up their liquid.

Prrrrrrr!!!!

Shiny Distractions

Wednesday, December 30th, 2009

Today we ran out of dish soap.  When I unscrewed the bottle to add some water to the little bit that remained, a million teeny tiny bubbles dashed into the air around me. tiny_bubbles

 Magic.

When the world throws magic at you during the most mundane tasks in life, this is truly a gift.  In other less lustrous times, we have to create our own magic amongst the dishes or surround ourselves with shiny distractions.  A few magical kitchen tools worth mentioning include…
