300 Coloured Vases, Hella Jongerius - photo: gerrit schreurs fotografie - courtesy: designboom.com

Hella Jongerius featured this installation of 300 vases at her a recent show: ”Misfit”  in the museum Boijmans van Beuningen, 2010.

The vases are documentation of the designer’s experiment in colour and glaze application. She used industrial paint in standard colours for the first 82 vases and then collaborated with the experts at royal tichelaar makkum to combine historical mineral recipies with contemporary formulas in a layering effect that resulted in new, unique and dynamic colours and patinas.

The rest of the show appears to have followed suit – arranged by colour across the walls of the gallery.

Eye Spy… Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi

Friday, January 7th, 2011

Butterfly Stool by Sori Yanagi for Vitra, 1954 - photo: vitra.com

A butterfly, a bird, a whale’s tail … there have been several comparisons drawn from this stool for several animals, insects, and various forms of organic design. This beautiful sculptural seat is made of two pieces of molded plywood joined together. Stunning from every angle, the Butterfly creates a gentle, thin silhouette as a result of the negative space in the body (or lack there of) of the stool.

The Butterfly is available in two sizes and in three different wood finishes: Maple, Palisander, and Cherry veneer. There is also a matching red cushion available, although I can’t imagine wanting to cover up the perfect symmetrical seam on top of this piece.

Bonaldo’s Pebble table nominated for Interior Design Best of Year award

Wednesday, December 1st, 2010

Pebble table by Demacker Designs for Bonaldo

Bonaldo’s new Pebble table by Matthias Demacker has been nominated for Interior Design Best of Year award. This unique table was inspired by something that is, here in Victoria, close to home: beach stones polished smooth by the sea.

This design is not only modern and unique, it’s also practical. The open body of the table makes this piece look light and open, and can also serve as valuable storage space for books, magazines, etc…  Although, you wouldn’t want to put your “Auto Mechanics for Dummies” manual inside this table – this space is reserved for your most treasured art books and design mags.

Constructed of plastic, Bonaldo boasts that this table is suitable for indoor and outdoor use. It’s also available to order in all one colour or two colour options – one exterior, one interior.

Pebble is a simple, fun, and functional design that would work in a variety of applications. Designer, Matthias Demacker, will find out if Pebble takes the Accessories Design Best of Year award tonight – Dec. 2nd in NY. Also in the running for an award is Emeco’s 111 Navy Chair in the Seating: Residential/Accent category and Vitra’s new Suita Sofa in the Seating: Residential/Lounge group (contact us for details).

contact us for pricing and details on the Pebble table.

Herman Miller Select 2010 Edition Hang-It-All

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

Herman Miller's Eames Select 2010 Hang It All

Herman Miller has sold out of their Select 2010 Edition – the Eames Hang-it-All with walnut hooks and black frame. Luckily, Gabriel Ross stocked up on this collector’s item and we still have some left. Herman Miller only produced 3500 of the limited edition coat rack, and sold out months ahead of their anticipated cut off date.

Eames Hang It All - multicoloured original version

This version of Charles and Ray Eames’ Hang-It-All is a sleek and sophisticated interpretation of the multicoloured original that we all love but maybe wouldn’t want to hang in our carefully colour schemed living spaces. The select 2010 version is appropriate for any room as it is relatively neutral and classic.

From Herman Miller’s website:

With their Hang-It-All, Charles and Ray Eames made the everyday coat rack inventive and fun. Their whimsical original design features a white frame and multicolored hooks. Our exclusive Herman Miller Select 2010 Edition reinterprets this classic with solid walnut hooks against a black frame.

Eye Spy … Dr. Skud

Friday, October 29th, 2010

Dr. Skud by Philippe Starck for Alessi

My co-worker recently introduced me to Dr. Skud. She is really quite amazing. I love that Philippe Starck applied his design savvy to an everyday object like a fly swatter and that Alessi made it  accessible to all at a price of $17.00 on our website. The face image that’s created by pin holes through the swatter, varies depending on lighting and what angle you view her at.

Dr. Skuds

The small, but functional, tripod stand makes it easy to display, as this is not a fly swatter that you will want to hide under the kitchen sink.

Dr. Skud feet

Totally utilitarian, with a unique twist, this is the perfect gift for the host that already has it all, or for … me!  (here’s to hoping my friends and family are fans of this blog)

Eames Hang-It-All Select Limited Edition

Monday, August 16th, 2010

Herman Miller Select™ 2010 Eames® Hang–It–All®

As of August 15, 2010, Herman Miller’s Select program is presenting a new classy looking Eames Hang-It-All from the multicoloured version to a striking design which now includes a black steel frame and solid walnut hooks.

The Hang-It-All was inspired by the Eameses’ love for playful furniture and children’s toys. Introduced in 1953, it was designed to hold an assortment of children’s belongings—mittens, scarves, jackets, dolls, slingshots, skates, and knapsacks, according to Eames Design.

It was available from Tigrett Enterprises’ Playhouse Division until the company went out of business in 1961. Herman Miller reintroduced it in 1994.

Herman Miller’s Gregg Vander Kooi chose to feature the Hang-It-All as this year’s Select item because of its whimsical appeal.

“Plus,” he adds, “walnut is a fairly neutral wood that fits with almost any décor.”

If you want one you better hurry! It’s only being offered until February 15, 2011, or while supplies last.
